And I want you so it’s an obsession.

Love, the antepenultimate goal
if we weren’t so damned busy
chasing it as the one thing needed,
failing on average often as not.

And sometimes recognizing
when we hold treasure for two,
neither squandering nor hoarding.

Loss, the penultimate betrayal
of daring to hope that forever
is a definitive, despite the proof
and our refusal to think truth.

And sometimes we remember
more than we forget, realizing
the enormity of what we gained.

Grief, the ultimate refusal to believe
that our lives are flat, screaming
in denial as we find we’ve fallen
over the edge we kept denying.

And we might not hold love again,
we might fear loss and grief again,
or we might take the chances again.
